American Volleyball Player Rachel Richardson Wiki | Bio
Rachel Richardson (born on November 4, 2002) is a 20-year-old famous volleyball player, who has always been in the limelight for her amazing games, but things have changed after her last match; she once again was in the headlines; this time, it was not for her skills, but what her father Marvin Richardson said in ABC affiliate WTVD.
Richardson, a student of Duke University, was made a target of racial slurs during her match against Bringham Young University in Provo, Utah; she was repeatedly called the “N-word,” and other insults were thrown at her and her black teammates by a fan from the opposite university, who was there to support Bringham Young.
Her father came out and spoke in public about the whole incident and expressed his disappointment with how the adults present there handled the situation. Marvin said that Rachel had called him crying and told him about the entire incident; being a father, seeing his daughter like this took him aback, and to make things worse, no one did anything about it; he expected at least their team coach to take some action, to make that person leave the room, but nothing was done.
BYU’s Response
Coming to the university’s response, BYU published an apology the day after the match. The university announced that they had banned the fan from entering athletic venues and made it clear that he was not a student of their university; and also expressed their sympathy toward the athletes, adding that racism is wrong and they are learning from this experience and will do things differently in the future.
How Rachel Richardson Reacted After the Incident?
Richardson took to Twitter to express what she felt during and after the incident; she wrote in her tweet that once the slurs and comments grew into threats, she was not only scared but felt unsafe too, even after informing the officials and BYU coaching staff about the unacceptable behavior, they failed to create a safe environment which also affected their match and their performance, her whole team struggled to get through the game, what shocked Rachel, even more, was that the issue was not even being addressed immediately, she doesn’t want any athlete, regardless of their race to be in such hostile conditions.
She was grateful to BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe, who took action in a very respectful and genuine way once he was notified. This young athlete is well aware of the racial difficulties people of the color face; she hopes that chance to educate those who act in hateful ways and have a better world for the next generation.
Who are Rachel Richardson’s Parents?
Rachel Richardson (age 20) was born in Ellicott City, Maryland, on November 4, 2002, to Gloria Richardson and Marvin Richardson; she has 5 siblings, two brothers, Roy and Matthew, and 3 sisters, Monique, Ravyn, and Reeana. Just like her sisters Ravyn and Reeana, Rachel was also into volleyball; she attended St. John’s College High School and, with her gifted athletic ability, has made quite a name for herself.
How did Rachel Richardson get into volleyball?
While in high school, she competed in the USA Girls Open Junior National Championship and played for 4 years; she was named Player of the Year in 2019-2020, and she went on to become a Member of both the National Honor Society and the Spanish National Honor Society, at a very young age, in her senior class she was named representative and acted as a tutor and was part of the Best Buddies program.
